H2 blockers and Antibiotics?

I've gotten a few comments saying not to take reflux meds with antibiotics... But I've looked around at many different websites for both the med that Micah's on and for the anti and at several drug interaction sites and find nothing that says not to do it together. I'd separate them, but seriously we're talking about giving meds five times a day then. And I don't do meds 2x a day very well. Much less 3 (which is what we're doing now). So... FIVE???

If I really cannot give them together... I won't, but ohhhhhhh myyy.... Can anyone find info that says I shouldn't give an H2 blocker with an anti??

  1. Call your pharmacist, they can tell you exactly what you can and can't give together!

  2. Hannah is on twice the adult doseage of reflux meds and often takes antis with them.I have never once had the pharmacist or Dr say anything about not taking them together. There is nothing in the literature that comes with them.I would not worry about it unless someone can come up with some specific evidence why it should not be done.

  3. My husband is a pharmacist and says there are no major interactions with the H2 blockers and antibiotics (it is the antacids you want to avoid--like tums). If he is on a multi-vitamin you will want to give those at a different time than his antibiotic though. Hope this helps!

  5. my son is a pharmacist and he says wait 2 hours to be safe. he said the h2 diminish acid and other chemicals the body makes and could very well diminish the effects of antis. he said he would at least do for the first 2 days of treatment.

  6. Actually, many h2 blockers are given with antibiotics to treat Hpilori. I would ask your doctor or pharamacist. Angela was on both, simultaneously, for YEARS!

  7. I have a friend that is a pharmacist. If you send me the names of both of the meds in an email, I will ask her and get her opinion! Let me know!
