It's that time of the year again... When the pesky creatures stop dying off from cold weather and instead become a huge nuisance to our everyday lives. Avoiding areas where they are swarming is one thing, but having three or four stuck in the car during drives a round town is an entirely different problem.
Add to that the idea that several of our kids don't recognize the pesky itchy feeling of a bug biting them, and you have kids with five and six bites clustered together and a few of the kids who swell up pretty significAntly from those pesky bites.
After a ten minute car ride, both Micah and James ended up with bites on the back of their necks, and Wesley, while laying in his bed at the house, had two on his arm which swelled up significantly and required oral benadryl for a day...
So, anyone have a safe home remedy of bug spray that we can. Use on the kids on a daily basis which won't harm them in it's frequent use yet will save them from those nasty little critters?
I've done a little Internet research on it and came up with a few, but if someone out there has a tried and true version I'd be much happier trying that!
I've heard that Avon Skin So Soft is a great product for moisturizing and a natural bug repellant. Not sure of any home-made ones but will keep an eye out for them.
ReplyDeleteI have friends that tuck a dryer sheet into their pants and swear that they never get bitten, even when hiking in the woods.
ReplyDeleteA friend of mine swears by pure vanilla extract.Im not sure how it works personally because its still snowing here in Wyoming lol but might be woth a try?your local health food store might have an idea too :)
ReplyDeleteThe Avon bug repellent without DDT is excellent and the smell isn't too bad either.
ReplyDeletei've heard of the avon skin-so-soft working well .
ReplyDeleteVanilla extract works for biting flies not sure about mosquitoes
ReplyDeleteSkin-So-Soft. Our peds doctor recommended it even on our infant that was still to small for traditional bug spray. Better yet I just saw in an Avon catalog they have one that goes on blue & then "disappears" so you can make sure you cover all areas. This same one is also an SPF35.
ReplyDeleteDitto the Avon SSS. Add a little of the bath oil to their bath so that they get a good coating of it all over, and see if it works!!
ReplyDeleteNot a repellant, but this is a magical way to get rid of the bites before they become itchy pesky scratchy things. When fresh put soap on them. It must draw out what ever the mosquito puts in there. Anyway, I was taught to use Dial soap, but any soap seems to work. Liquid or bar. If a bar, wet the soap, rub your fingers over it and then rub the fingers on the mosquito bite. Couldn't be simpler- could it? Yes, it could. With liquid soap, pump a little soap on a finger or 2, then rub the bite. It's magic I tell you! I just did it today- first bite of some kind this season in Texas! I even do it on not so fresh bites and if you're lucky, it still can work!
ReplyDeleteHey- you could even keep some liquid soap in the car!
Good luck! SHAUNA
I'm with those, who recommend Avon. Works wonders for my kids.
ReplyDeleteMy kids are really allergic to the bites too, they welt up and get to be really hard red welts that are the size of ping pong balls sometimes. The gnats are a big problem up here, mosquitoes are only bad at dusk during the summer. Skin-so-soft has a good rep for working, we get those little clip on OFF buckle things and that seems to work pretty well and we don't have to spray anyone with anything.
ReplyDeleteI just saw they also have arm bands on One Step Ahead, I am going to try those this year. I have used Skin So Soft in the past and it works ok.
ReplyDeleteskin so soft is the BEST for misquto bites. We go camping every summer i buy alot of this to keep in the camper. It also keeps they skin nice and soft and it does repell against those pests.
